Do you have Family Insurance?

Life Insurance

Today I am writing this as a dad, as a husband, and as a person who truly cares for the people that I come in contact with.  I am writing this because to many times I see people neglect to insure their family, and the aftermath is painful, and heartbreaking.  There is nothing worse than hearing about a family that lost their home because mom or dad died.  There is nothing worse than watching a young widow struggle to get by with her kids because her spouse passed away unexpectedly – yet it happens every day.  These situations are preventable if we just have a discussion about it, if we as parents and spouses make it a priority vs being out of sight out of mind.

So, that being said let me ask you a few tough questions:  Is your family a priority? How do you want to leave your family?  How do you want to be remembered?

Think about this with me for a few moments before you stop reading.  We live in a time when we tend to insure everything but “forget” / neglect to insure the one thing that matters most………our family.  When you buy a new car – the dealership won’t let you leave the lot until they confirm you have car insurance.  You buy a new house, the bank / title company will not give you possession of the house and close the loan until your insurance is paid for and in-force.  You purchase a cell phone and they ask “do you want apple care, or do you want our insurance plan.”  We buy these items and the list could go on and on and we do not hesitate to pay for insurance on them. We wouldn’t feel right if our home, or our car was uninsured, heck we might even lose sleep.  Why?  Because we want to make sure that if our item breaks, or gets stolen, or catches fire that it is covered.  We want to make sure our “things” are protected.

I have been an insurance agent now for almost 17 years.  Over those 17 years I have seen the pride and passion that people have for their “things” and for insuring them – their cars, boats, ATV’s, guns, etc.  and yet most often when you ask a person if they have “family insurance” aka life insurance the response is: “I don’t need it” or “I can’t afford it” or “I will get to that” or “I have $25K through work” etc.

I know this is getting long, but stay with me I have a few more though questions.  If you suddenly passed away tomorrow do you seriously think $25K would be enough money for your family to get by on?  Do you seriously think your spouse would want to hear “they never got around to buying that?”  Families that have life insurance get to make decisions, while families without life insurance have decision made for them.  As a dad I ask my self, if I die who is going to financially take care of my kids?  As a husband I ask who is going to take care of my wife – WHO is going to take care of MY FAMILY?

In closing I ask you to think about this – if something happens to you,  what do you want to happen to your family?
